FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS NOT CONSIDERED A RESIDENTIALLY GENERATED SHARP
Any sharps- needles, syringes, lancets, and other sharp materials that
come in contact with human blood or other body fluid-should be disposed
of properly. Veterinarians, residents homes, schools, doctors, other
medical professionals, etc. that use SHARPS are not considered home
generated and cannot participate in Ulster County's residential SHARP
drop-off program.
Under Article 28, health care facilities in New York State are required by law to accept medical waste from residents in appropriate, puncture-proof containers at no cost. In Ulster County, health facilities have coordinated a pre-scheduled collection program. In addition, all Ulster County pharmacies can participate in the distribution of free SHARPS containers, which have been donated by Becton-Dickinson, a medical supply manufacturer. BUT, health care facilities are not required to take SHARPS from other types of generators. Non-resident generators must arrange for disposal of SHARPS independently through a qualified medical waste carter. A qualified carter should provide you with the proper transporting permits and insurance, information on the disposal site, and a manifest for your records.
MEDICAL CARTING COMPANIES
The following companies are/have been used by other Ulster County
health care facilities for proper SHARP disposal. This list should not
be interpreted in any way as an endorsement of these providers or as
being the only qualified carters available. Before contracting with
any hauler, it is recommended that a list of qualifications, permits,
and references be provided.
