Ulster County is located in the Mid-Hudson Valley Region of New York State approximately 92 miles north of New York City, and 50 miles south of Albany. The County covers approximately 1,140 square miles. Today, the population is estimated at 177,000 based on 2000 Census.

There are 24 municipalities in the County: 3 villages, 1 city, and 20 towns. Historically, the municipalities of Ulster County were individually responsible for managing solid waste, and there was no coordinated Countywide system for solid waste management. More

Freecycle is a community based bulletin board system which enables people from the same general area to give away, trade or pick up wanted items for free. HUDSON VALLEY MATERIAL EXCHANGE HVME is an educational waste prevention organization that fosters business and community development, art and culture, environmental protection, and sustainable living through its services.

EECYCLE is a Northern Dutchess based community bulletin board system with almost 4000 members. All items posted must be free, legal and appropriate for all ages.

THROWPLACE is a web site where global Businesses and Individuals are able to list excess inventory, possessions or goods, providing access to potential users. Charities, Businesses or Individuals registered with Throwplace.com® are able to search the site for things that they can use, and make requests for items of interest. Items listed on Throwplace are not for sale—they are to be given away.
